Refletion of ISTE standards and my teaching:
1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
I come close to meeting all the criteria for this standard in my classroom. Currently, I am lucky enough to have a set of 12 student iPads in my classroom and I strive to give students the opportunity to explore new topics and real world situations on their own and with guidance. Regularly, I have students use technology and collaborative technologies to reflect on completed projects or other work using Schoology, Google Drive and the iWork suite.
In terms of improving on this standard in my teaching, I am constantly looking for ways to help my students be more creative and innovative. These are skills and abilities that students can apply in real life.
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
In my current teaching I use tools like Schoology and Edmodo, which transform my classroom into a technology hub. Students have no choice but to embrace the technology and use it to some degree. Additionally, I am asking students to take charge of much of their own learning, by exploring new topics on their own or in small groups and developing their own understanding.
Other tools I use for students to embrace their individual curiosities include The Khan Academy, Manga High, Learnzillion and other specific Apps for the ipad that develop number sense such as Algebra Touch.
Additionally, I regularly give different options for projects or assessments to meet the needs of different learners. For instance, if we are working on Surface Area, I will give an option for students to create a presentation in Google Docs, a movie in iMove, a paper and pencil test or some other creative idea the students come up with.
An area for me to strengthen to to provide more formative assessments AND feedback to students. I have used exit tickets and check ins in the past, but I am still missing the feedback portion. Currently, summative assessments inform me a great deal and the students very little.
3. Model digital age work and learning
In my classroom, I use more technology than 95 percent of teachers. I have one teacher computer, three student computers, 12 iPads (31 in the fall), a document camera, SMART board, CPS clickers and a projector. I am not sure how I could model more technology use. Technology is used daily and for large swathes of the class period.
Moreover, I understand technology thoroughly and am energized by the idea of implementing new tools. Oftentimes, I share any new ideas and information I discover and learn with colleagues in my building and across my district. Teachers often walk by and see me using a website, app or other tool and ask me about it. I feel I meet the criteria for this standard easily.
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility
To be honest, I do not specifically model or teach my students how to be good digital citizens. This is an area I need to strengthen and develop more strategies and tools. I do see this standard as quite important to my students and I would very much like to improve in this area.
5. Engage in professional growth and leadership
Currently I am the “technology coordinator” at my building. I help other teachers and staff troubleshoot a vast array of tech issues. Whether the issue is a printer problem or a complex grade book issue or figuring out how to use their SMART board, I help teachers when they get stuck on technology.
More importantly, I share any new technology I find with my staff and help other develop their technology skills. For instance, I discovered a website called Classdojo. This site allows students and parent to view the behavioral ratings in class based on teacher feedback. There are also some other tools like attendance and a random student picker. I shared and demonstrated this technology with several colleagues and a handful of them started using it with success.
An area to work on for this standard is to read and reflect more current research about digital tools. If there tools are available to me that work well, I ought to know about them as it will benefit my students. My goal is the benefit my students as much as humanly possible.
